“Jerrold strives for the high melodic ideals of tenor giants such as Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson - saxophonists who put a well-placed note ahead of a sheet of sound.” - All About Jazz
Winner of the 2009 “Jazz Recording of the Year” for his sophomore CD “The Maverick”, Edmonton based saxophonist Jerrold Dubyk is becoming recognized as one of the finer exponents of contemporary jazz in this country.
Jerrold has been pursuing music with a newly acquired spirit that led him to New Jersey/New York where he completed his M.M. in Jazz Studies at Rutgers Univ. with his mentor, saxophonist Ralph Bowen. Studies and gigs (The Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Sweet Rhythm, Smoke, Cecil’s and Ortlieb’s) with Victor Lewis, Stanley Cowell, Conrad Herwig and many other distinguished jazz musicians in the New Jersey/New York/Philadelphia area have given him the energy to keep on keepin’ on. Jerrold has toured the major jazz festivals of Canada. Jerrold is on a search to create his own voice shaped by his influences.
As part of the Grant MacEwan University and Victoria School of the Arts Faculty, he is of the opinion that all good music has a groove and is strongly opposed to the philosophy of “those who can’t play, teach”.
