Fernanda Cunha

[her singing] evokes images of white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and cool breezes. - Tan Hee Hui, The Jakarta Post

Bio

Fernanda Cunha rose out of the rich Brazilian jazz scene to become a rising luminary in international jazz.

Extended bio arrow

Born into a musical family, Fernanda’s mother is the renowned Brazilian singer Telma Costa, and her aunts are the renowned composers Sueli and Lisieux Costa. Following in those footsteps. She began her career in 1997 and has since toured Brazil, South America, Europe, Asia and North America performing at prestigious international jazz festivals like Jazz a Juan (France), Wien Jazz festival(Austria), Aarhus Jazz festival (Denmark), Badajoz (Spain), Jazz al fin (Argentina), Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto Jazz festivals (Canada), among others. Regular appearances at jazz festivals in Canada have helped to carve out a whole new fan base for Cunha’s post-bossa groove, and now she is repaying the compliment with her new CD Brazil-Canada.

She will be performing at Yukon accompanied by Canadian musicians Michael Creber (piano), Doug Stephenson (bass) and Phil Belanger (drums).  They played together at Vancouver Jazz festival in 2010 and at Borneo Jazz festival, Malaysia 2011. Fernanda has invited the trio to play with her again for Yukon´s audience.  The quartet will play songs from Fernanda´s CD “Brasil Canada” plus Brazilian standards written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Ivan Lins, among others.
