Established in 1994, Jazz on the Wing provides a unique northern venue for Canadian and international jazz artists. Each year, between September and April, Jazz Yukon presents six shows in Whitehorse and occasionally in other Yukon communities.
In Whitehorse Jazz on the Wing is presented at the Yukon Arts Centre. The spacious stage has been repurposed as an intimate, cabaret-style venue with seating for 135, bar service and snacks. The audience joins the musicians on stage, providing a warm, club-like atmosphere appreciated by audience members and artists alike. “This is the first Jazz on the Wing I have attended and it will not be the last... it was a great evening.”
“I love the intimacy, the quietness and focus of the evening. And the fact that I can have dessert and a glass of wine. To attend Jazz on the Wing for me is really a night out.”
"As a band leader who has performed internationally and across Canada for many years, my sextet’s treatment by Jazz Yukon was first rate. Having toured my band to Europe, Asia, Australia and across Canada, I can say that there are few jazz societies worldwide that provide the combined kind of logistical support, warm hospitality, excellent accommodations, renumeration, and flight support that is provided by Jazz Yukon. My band was extremely well taken care of from the moment we landed in Whitehorse until our departure. The Yukon Arts Centre is a fantastic performance venue that provides the perfect environment to feature my ensemble in a concert setting with great acoustics and an intimate atmosphere. Yukon Jazz unquestionably is an example to follow."
- Darren Sigesmund, jazz musician and composer after his September 2011 Jazz on the Wing
"What a treat to perform at Yukon! Performing at Jazz on the Wing series and Jazz Yukon was a wonderful, special and memorable experience in my career. The audience is great, very attentive and warm. Yukon jazz staff is generous, kind, and extremely professional."
- Fernanda Cunha, Brazilian vocalist after her October 2011 Yukon tour
"Jazz Yukon is one of the most efficiently run jazz societies in the world. My personal treatment was totally supportive and their consideration for the people of the Yukon is one of nurturing and caring for their personal musical growth. They deserve all the support they can receive so they can continue to provide a diverse, jazz inspired music of quality to all those willing to listen."
- David Friesen jazz musician, composer, educator after his February 2011 tour
“Jazz on the Wing exemplifies the ideal concert series designed to produce a first-class experience for all involved. To the community of Whitehorse, it presents thoughtful and quality jazz programming in an intimate and relaxed setting. To its artists, it guarantees: warm hospitality, an intelligent audience, an efficient production crew, an inspiring venue, and courteous leadership from its artistic director. All of this is happening in Whitehorse Yukon, a rugged and stirring place in our country.”
